Yesterday, a customer came into the store to obtain a loan. She
had what was clearly a family heirloom - a jeweled belt - in her
hand. In her other hand, she clasped an embroidered handkerchief,
which was damp with tears.
Somehow,
I knew that she would never be able to repay a loan against her
family heirloom, and yet she desperately needed the money.
I
explained to her that Queenly Pawn is not a "normal" pawn
shop. We buy items from people at fair market value. What makes
us different from a regular buyer is that we do not attempt to sell
the new merchandise right away. Instead, we give the person 90 days
to come back and buy it back from us. We also retain the right to
refuse to purchase an item.
In
the case of the woman with the jeweled belt, I was faced with an
ethical dilemma. I truly did not know what to do, so I told her
we were low on cash and what she was selling was quite valuable.
I asked her to come back in a week.
